The Genesis of the Golden Fish
This wonderful award was devised to demonstrate the power of individuals and groups who step out of their comfort zones, work together, going above and beyond for the greater good of the Northpoint Cooperative Preschool.
Since the start of this Coop, as in any beginnings of a business, there have been trials and tribulations, but a little over a decade ago the Board found itself faced with unique challenges. According to Laurie Evezich, founder of the Golden Fish award along with Maura Toohey and the Board members of that time including Sandy Caviezal, Bates representative, found the work that year was made very challenging as a result of their negotiations for a long term lease with the land owners. Laurie aptly put it, "There were as many ideas and thoughts about how to proceed as there were members of the Board."
The Board believed it was important to remind themselves that their overall objective was the same -- a permanent home for our preschool. They felt that it was important to recognize the unique efforts and contributions that each of the members brought to the cause. The Golden Fish would serve to remind individuals that they were a part of a team, as they would be reminded that they were not alone in working for the betterment of the Coop. The Golden Fish is meant to recognize those who have stepped out of their comfort zone, tried something new and gone above and beyond, and is the perfect symbol to represent a member's outstanding efforts on behalf of the Coop for "swimming against the current (of adversity)", or "some quietly performed kindness or sacrifice."
Through the efforts of members past and present, we are reminded with this Golden Fish Award that the Coop is a strong organization because of the strength and commitment of its membership; like the math adage, “the sum is greater than the whole of its parts,” we are strongest when we work together."
